It’s the little things…..

In our busy, gotta slay the dragon world, let’s be sure to remember the little things.

The kind word,

The smile,

The encouraging note or card,

It doesn’t take long…  Just a minute

Is the Republican Convention rigged?

This is the question that some political candidates and pundits are asking.  I don’t know if it is rigged, but I would suggest that it is antiquated.   I heard on the news this morning that most of the rules have not been changed in 160 years.    Now I like stability as much as the next person, but let’s consider what this means…..

donkey-and-elephant

A century and a half ago, there was no internet, and there was very little personal transportation.  The automobile came on the scene in 1886, and that was only 130 years ago.  Without personal transportation, local primaries and selection of delegates were of paramount importance.  Most people had horses, and they could travel around their districts, but it would have been a hardship for most of them to get to a state capital.   It would have been incumbent upon the ‘Party” to have representatives who could go to the state conventions and declare the will of the people who voted in the local primaries.

There was certainly no internet, as Al Gore had not been born yet.  I know he takes credit for inventing the internet (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnFJ8cHAlco) , and that is somewhat my point.

Because we have very fast modes of personal transportation, and even faster web presences, maybe the local primary and delegate selection is somewhat passé?  I for one, am exhausted by the current process that takes approximately eighteen months to two years.  Yes, in the past, we have needed that much time to hear from everyone in this huge nation.  However, I believe that we might be better served to have a shorter election season, say approximately six months.  In that time, each state could hold its election for its respective parties, and we could come to a convention and ultimately to an election without having experienced political fatigue.

Seriously, what will we hear in the next seven months that we have not already heard in the past year?  The silly season will be upon us, (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/silly%20season) and who has time for that.  I daresay that most of the American population has made up its mind as to what candidate should represent it in November.

I understand that we have about twenty-two states and territories that have not cast their votes, and I am certainly not willing to shortcut their process.  However, I would suggest that we as a nation would be better serve to condense the election cycle and possibly omit the delegate selection due to the advanced nature of current communication options.

  1. Everyone has the ability via transportation to make his voice heard;
  2. Social media/cable news/network news brings the matters at hand to every consumer in lightning fast speed;
  3. Do we really need Super Delegates and Party bosses nominating people to speak for ‘we the people”? Surely, We the People have found our voice….

Until next time,

Beware of Social Media Docs

Heavy_Metal_Poisoning-2

Like most of you, I have a business FaceBook page.  We find it a great tool to market our business and to share good information with like minded people.  However, I am concerned with some of the posts that I am seeing from pages that I have ‘liked’.

For instance, I am seeing quite a few posts with titles such as these:

  1. “Detox your (insert favorite organ here) in a weekend (24/48 hours) or some other such ridiculous time frame.”
  2. “Use this amazing oil and see these conditions reverse.”
  3. “Did you know that the juice of this fruit will do ______________?”

Now, some of the information has some basis of truth, but the Detox ones really frustrate me.  Here are the reasons:

  1. Most people carry a toxic load at the cellular level. You only have to look around to see the toxic emotional outbursts and you will know that at the cellular level, this person is compromised.  There is no way that you could detox anything in a weekend.
  2. People who are carrying a toxic load usually do not have the energy to detoxify, especially at the cellular level. If they try one of these box remedies, or any sort of detox protocol, they will only succeed in shifting the load.  The end result of the patient is worse than before.
  3. Translocation of the toxins will occur if you disrupt the body’s homeostasis (balance) before ensuring that the body is healthy and energetic enough to handle the detox procedure.
  4. In years past, holistic people would look for and even encourage such a response, called a healing crisis. I don’t know about you, but anything that says ‘crisis’ is to be avoided in my book.  A patient is ill enough without my making matters worse by forcing the body into a down and dirty detox procedure.

Responsible cellular housekeeping is something that the body knows how to do, but is impeded because of the toxic environment.  As a professional, I implore you to seek out someone with credible knowledge who is able to guide you in a responsible manner.   Please don’t believe everything you read from health ‘experts’ on social media.  Most of the posts are irresponsible and misleading

Until next time,

WE.THE.PEOPLE

We. The. People.

Yes, this is how our Constitution starts. We. The. People.   It is not government handing down edicts from above in their lofty places.   It is we the people from the ground up that govern ourselves. We elect representatives to accomplish the wishes of the majority of the people who are the rightful legal citizens of that land.

For too long, We. The. People. have not demanded that our government and its elected officials hear us. For too long, the powers that be (in all parties) have ignored the wishes of We.The.People and have issued executive orders and official mandates that have had nothing to do with the grassroots.

As we near the 2016 election, it would behoove the National representatives of both parties to hear We.The.People and understand that there may be a significant revolt/revolution if our voices are not heeded…..

Warring for Self

Warrior Woman

This term has been resounding in my spirit all year. What does it mean? I saw this graphic and I really feel that this is who we are. We all have heard the Helen Reddy song, “I am woman”, (hear me roar!) This was a feminist anthem, and while it was good, and it served a purpose back in the ’70s, this is not what I am talking about.

warrior

We are women. We war. We war on behalf of our spouse. We war on behalf of our children. We war at work. We war at school. Some of us even war at church. However, do we war for ourselves?

What does that mean? As women, most of us are caregivers in one sense of the word or other. We put almost everyone and everything above ourselves. This is a good trait, a serving trait if you will, but it can be detrimental to our health.

Let me explain a few scenarios: You are stretched to the max with all your day-to-day activities, and have no time to prepare good home-cooked meals. You know you should, but there is always something that speaks louder: The deadline at the office; Little Johnny’s soccer practice; gymnastics for Sally, and of course, don’t forget weekly worship practice at the church. None of these things are wrong or bad. However, when we are too busy to take care of our nourishment, we are too busy.

Again, there is not one thing more that can be squeezed into the schedule, but when your BFF calls and needs you, you decide to shave a little time off here and there to accommodate that one more thing…. Occasionally this is OK, and maybe even needful. When it becomes a way of life, then we need to re-assess.

We need to war for our bodies. We need to war for our health. We need to war for our relaxation. We need to war for our peace, both emotional and spiritual.

We need to pull away. We need to look at the big picture. You see, if you don’t war for yourself, soon there will be no Warrior Woman to war for others.

Something to think about,

Until next time,

Dr. Polly

Fear is a killer

Emotions are things. Thoughts are things. Yes, they are intangible, nevertheless they are real. As children we sing the ditty “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” Nothing could be further from the truth. Words are powerful. Words can heal. Words can kill.

Jesus tells us in Matthew 12:37: “Let me tell you something: Every one of these careless words is going to come back to haunt you. There will be a time of Reckoning. Words are powerful; take them seriously. Words can be your salvation. Words can also be your damnation.” Think about what you say. Think about what you are giving power to.

Very often in a Naturopathic practice, we will see either emotional, mental, or spiritual trauma in our assessments. We will ask questions, and the patient will usually tell us about some incident that happened in the past, and the words that were associated with it. Sometimes just evoking the memory of those words will be enough to start the tears flowing.   Don’t tell me that words don’t have a lasting impression for good or ill.

Holistic medicine is very different from allopathic medicine. It is common to hear the phrase “the issues are in the tissues,” which is naturopathic speak for emotional trauma that leads to physical illness. It is estimated that the cause of physical illness is 85% emotional.

So, what emotions are being fed by words? Look around you; what are we hearing today?   We are hearing that the sky is falling from many arenas: Political, Financial, Social. We don’t have to look very far to see carnage in the world today, whether it be in Paris, France, or San Bernadino, California. People are talking about terrorists, work place violence, civil rights, gun control. All of this language is designed to make us pay attention, and some people find it fearful.

The unknown is fearful. We have a tendency to take a situation, apply a ‘worst case scenario’ to it, (just so we will be prepared) and at the end of the day, the end result looks nothing like what we had conjured up between our ears.   Some of us are fatalist. What will be will be, and there is nothing we can do to change it. Some of us are victims. We believe we have to do unto others BEFORE they do unto us.

fear

All of this is negative. All of this can breed fear. Fear has torment. Again, we learn from the Good Book, “There is no fear in love [dread does not exist], but full-grown (complete, perfect) love turns fear out of doors and expels every trace of terror! For fear brings with it the thought of punishment, and [so] he who is afraid has not reached the full maturity of love [is not yet grown into love’s complete perfection]”. 1 John 4:18   The Dr. Polly translation is that because we have been hurt in life, we anticipate ‘hurt’ again.   Anything that reminds us of the past, or anything that is new or unfamiliar has the potential to ‘hurt.’

However, things change. We change. We grow. We are not the same vulnerable being that we once were. Let’s make a decision to look at the new and different with new and different eyes. Let’s forget about the past, and believe that this new and unfamiliar may be the answer to our prayer. It may be the silver lining that we have been looking for. It may just be the gold at the end of our rainbow.

Change your thoughts, change your words, change your life.

Until next time

The side effects of convenience

We live in a fast, fast/I want it now society. We see this in the ‘instant’ everything that we have: Instant text messages, snapchat, instant grits, instant photos, instant gratification. We are not a people who want to wait for anything.   Many of our conveniences are geared to satisfy the insatiable appetite for the insanely instant.

Take the microwave oven. I love mine, but it is just a counter decoration. I hardly ever use it. It is an expensive appliance that reheats my coffee.

I see many microwave recipes on facebook and pinterest, but what these great little recipes do not tell you is that the molecular structure of your food is changed as it is assaulted by microwaves.

emsMicrowaves_mainContent_microwave-background_WMAP

From Dr. Mercola:

Microwaves heat food by causing water molecules in it to resonate at very high frequencies and eventually turn to steam which heats your food. While this can rapidly heat your food, what most people fail to realize is that it also causes a change in your food’s chemical structure.

There are numerous issues that have emerged since microwave ovens were first introduced to consumers more than 40 years ago, besides depleting your food’s nutritional value, which will be addressed a bit later.

You would think, with all these tests and regulations, that you’d be safe. However, according to Powerwatch, a non-profit independent organization with a central role in the microwave radiation debate:

“Even when the microwave oven is working correctly, the microwave levels within the kitchen are likely to be significantly higher than those from any nearby cellular phone base-stations. Remember also that microwaves will travel through walls if the microwave oven is against an inside wall.”

But even if there’s nothing wrong with your microwave, keep in mind that standing a foot away from it while it’s running can expose you to upwards of 400 milliGauss, and a mere 4 milliGauss has been firmly linked to leukemia. It would certainly be wise to avoid letting your children stand near the microwave when it’s running, and avoid it yourself as much as possible—especially if you’re pregnant. Also, since your eyes are known to be particularly susceptible to microwave radiation (high microwave exposures are known to cause cataracts), I recommend stepping away from your microwave while it’s in use.

There has been surprisingly little research on how microwaves affect organic molecules, or how the human body responds to consuming microwaved food. Wouldn’t you expect that a product that sits in more than 90 percent of kitchens, as well as practically every break room in the country, would have been thoroughly investigated for safety?

The handful of studies that have been done generally agree, for the most part, that microwaving food damages its nutritional value. Your microwave turns your beautiful, organic veggies, for which you’ve paid such a premium in money or labor, into “dead” food that can cause disease! Heating food, in and of itself, can result in some nutrient loss, but using microwaves to heat food introduces the additional problem of the “microwave effect,” a phenomenon that will be discussed in detail later.

The majority of studies on microwaves and nutrition were conducted prior to 2000, I suspect because the focus of radiation research of late has shifted toward a more ominous threat: environmental radiation from electromagnetic devices, such as cell phones and computers, which has mushroomed into a gigantic cloud of electrosmog worldwide over the past decade.

Nevertheless, some excellent scientific data has been gathered regarding the detrimental effects of microwaves on the nutrients in your food:

  • A study published in the November 2003 issue of The Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture5 found that broccoli “zapped” in the microwave with a little water lost up to 97 percent of its beneficial antioxidants. By comparison, steamed broccoli lost 11 percent or fewer of its antioxidants. There were also reductions in phenolic compounds and glucosinolates, but mineral levels remained intact.
  • A 1999 Scandinavian study of the cooking of asparagus spears found that microwaving caused a reduction in vitamin C6.
  • In a study of garlic, as little as 60 seconds of microwave heating was enough to inactivate its allinase, garlic’s principle active ingredient against cancer7.
  • A Japanese study by Watanabe showed that just 6 minutes of microwave heating turned 30-40 percent of the B12 in milk into an inert (dead) form8. This study has been cited by Dr. Andrew Weil as evidence supporting his concerns about the effects of microwaving. Dr. Weil wrote:

There may be dangers associated with microwaving food… there is a question as to whether microwaving alters protein chemistry in ways that might be harmful.”

  • A recent Australian study9 showed that microwaves cause a higher degree of “protein unfolding” than conventional heating.
  • Microwaving can destroy the essential disease-fighting agents in breast milk that offer protection for your baby. In 1992, Quan found that microwaved breast milk lost lysozyme activity, antibodies, and fostered the growth of more potentially pathogenic bacteria10.
  • Quan stated that more damage was done to the milk by microwaving than by other methods of heating, concluding: “Microwaving appears to be contraindicated at high-temperatures, and questions regarding its safety exist even at low temperatures.
  •  Another study about breast milk/infant formula by Lee in 198911 found vitamin content becomes depleted by microwaving, and certain amino acids are converted into other substances that are biologically inactive. Some altered amino acids are poisons to the nervous system and kidneys. (Numerous authors mention this study, yet I was unable to find the original article/study, so I cannot personally validate.)
  • Although many of the above studies are not new, there is certainly ample evidence that microwaving is NOT good for your food.

I know this is quite a bit of information to digest, and it is far longer than a sound-bite. If you want the full story, please see the link below….

Medical News Today states: Sucralose Causes Cancer Concern

Sugar is sugar is sugar, right?   Maybe not. There is real sugar, then there are the substitutes:   You know, those cute little packets– the pink one, the blue one and the yellow one.   But what is actually in those packets?

The Pink one has saccharin in it.   The blue one has aspartame, which is a known neurotoxin. The yellow one has sucralose, which is chlorinated sucrose.   Now Sucrose comes from a plant. It comes from cane or beet sugar. Why does it need to have chlorine? Why would anyone want to ingest chlorine? When we ingest chlorine, all of the internal flora is affected. When we do not have the right good bacteria in the gut, we will not metabolize our food properly. Without the right flora, we will have gas, bloating, and an increase in weight.

Think before you add the sugar substitutes…..

Medical News Today states: Sucralose Causes Cancer Concern

Published: Wednesday 25 April 2012 at 1pm PST

93

Following the discovery in a new study that mice have a higher risk of developing cancer after eating the popular British-made low-calorie artificial sweetener sucralose, a leading cancer scientist calls for urgent research.

Dr. Morando Soffritti, director of the Ramazzini Institute in Bologna, Italy will present the findings of the study for the first time at the Childhood Cancer 2012 conference in London.

Hundreds of millions of people all around the world consume artificial sweeteners, which can be found in a large variety of foods and drinks, including soft drinks, cakes and foods for diabetics, as well as medicines. The increasing problem of obesity in developed countries, which started in the 70’s in Europe and the U.S., has led to increasing demands for reduced-calorie foods and drinks. However, the expansion of the artificial sweetener market has also led to rising concerns amongst consumers in terms of safety and potential long-term health effects, especially with regard to the potential cancer risks.

The truth about Calcium supplementation

CBS news and HealthDay reported a study that showed calcium supplementation did not live up to its claims as pertains to strengthening bones. I looked at that report and tried to find out who commissioned the report, and what supplements were tested. None of that information was available. On the television report, the reporter held a brand of calcium while she told the story, but that brand does not meet my criteria for bone supplementation.

Why? It does not have the cofactors needed to make calcium absorb-able to the body. The body will absorb calcium when it has its additional ‘helpers:’ boron, manganese, magnesium, zinc, Vitamin K2 and Vitamin D3. When you take a supplement with these cofactors at the recommended ratio, then the body will have the necessary nutrition to make good use of the calcium.

Another factor that was not taken into consideration is the source of the calcium.   You must take a plant based calcium, preferably organic, non-GMO sourced.  For example, antacids are also made from calcium. However, the source of the calcium is chalk.   No one would eat chalk. Chalk is not a food source.

There are many brands of calcium available to you. Check out the research, and find out which is clinically proven to improve bone density by 3% per annum. Now 3% does not seem great, but if we can arrest the bone loss and begin rebuilding the bone, then we can begin the war on osteoporosis.

Skeleton-calciumsml

Here is a list of one of my favorite brands with its ingredients:

Amount Per Serving
Vitamin C (as ascorbic acid) …50mg / 84% DV
Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) …500 IU / 125% DV
Vitamin K2 (menaquinone) …50mcg / 63% DV
Calcium …500mg / 50% DV
(as calcium hydroxide & calcium oxide)
Magnesium …300mg / 75% DV
(magnesium oxide and magnesium citrate)
Zinc (as monomethionate) …6mg / 40% DV
Copper (as copper citrate) …1mg / 50% DV
Manganese (as manganese sulfate) …2mg / 100% DV
HAI Amino Acid Extract (from sea algae) …<1mg*
Boron (as boron citrate‚ aspartate & glycinate) …2mg*

When you are looking for a good calcium supplement, please check for these cofactors. We have had people who had been told that they have a diagnosis of osteoporoses use good calcium supplementation and have their subsequent bone density tests show that their bones have improved. It can happen, but most people need to enlist the help of a professional to select the correct formula.

Until next time,
